Santri in the Age of AI: Upholding Tradition, Mastering Technology, and Building Civilization

Dr. Abdul Wadud Nafis, Lc., MEI

The development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has transformed various aspects of human life, ranging from education and economics to information dissemination. This transformation presents both challenges and opportunities for Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) in preparing a generation of santri capable of responding to the demands of the times. Santri must not only possess a deep understanding of Islamic knowledge but also develop digital literacy, critical thinking skills, and the ability to utilize technology effectively. The fundamental issue is not whether to preserve tradition or embrace modernity, but how to integrate the two to build a civilization grounded in knowledge, moral integrity, and progress.

1. Upholding the Scholarly Tradition of Pesantren

Pesantren possess a fundamental strength in their scholarly traditions, which have been passed down through generations through the study of classical Islamic texts (kitab kuning), the teaching of the Qur’an and Hadith, and the scholarly relationships among kiai (Islamic scholars and pesantren leaders), ustaz (Islamic teachers), and santri. These traditions are not solely concerned with acquiring knowledge; they also cultivate proper conduct (adab), sincerity, discipline, and moral responsibility. From an Islamic perspective, knowledge cannot be separated from good character and the pursuit of the common good.

Amid the rapid development of AI, the traditions of pesantren must remain the foundation of santri education. Technology may change, but the Islamic values that guide human life must be preserved. AI can assist in finding information and understanding learning materials, but it cannot fully replace the exemplary guidance of teachers, the depth of religious understanding, or the character formation fostered through life in a pesantren. Therefore, the modernization of pesantren must proceed without sacrificing their identity or undermining the strength of their scholarly traditions.

2. Mastering Technology Critically and Responsibly

AI offers significant opportunities for santri to improve the quality of learning, expand access to scholarly literature, develop language skills, and produce academic works. Santri can also use technology to promote moderate Islamic teachings, develop digital-based businesses, and introduce the intellectual heritage of pesantren to the global community.

However, the use of AI must be accompanied by critical thinking. Information generated by technology is not always accurate, complete, or consistent with the context of Islamic scholarship. Therefore, santri must cultivate the practice of tabayyun, or verifying information before accepting or sharing it, by examining sources, comparing references, and consulting teachers or Islamic scholars. AI should be regarded as a supporting tool rather than an absolute source of truth. Academic integrity, data protection, and responsibility in disseminating information must also become essential components of santri digital literacy.

3. Building a Progressive Islamic Civilization

The santri of the future must transform themselves from mere technology users into innovators and active contributors to civilization-building. They should be encouraged to become researchers, educators, digital entrepreneurs, educational content creators, and community leaders who integrate Islamic knowledge with technological expertise. Pesantren can play a strategic role in this process by developing digital curricula, providing AI training, strengthening entrepreneurship, and fostering collaboration with universities and industry.

The integration of religious knowledge and technology should be directed toward realizing the common good (maslahah) of the Muslim community and humanity at large. Technological progress should not be measured solely by the sophistication of machines, but also by its contribution to justice, prosperity, education, and human well-being. In this context, santri possess the moral and spiritual foundations necessary to help ensure that technology is used ethically and responsibly.

Conclusion

In the age of AI, santri must uphold scholarly traditions, master technology, and contribute to civilization-building without losing their identity. Pesantren traditions provide a foundation of values, technology offers instruments for progress, and noble character serves as a compass for determining the direction in which technology should be used. These three elements must work together so that santri can keep pace with changing times without abandoning Islamic principles.

Through an adaptive, critical, and public-welfare-oriented education, santri can emerge as an outstanding generation that uses artificial intelligence to strengthen knowledge, spread goodness, and build an Islamic civilization that is progressive, dignified, and sustainable.
