The Phenomenon of Maize Pants Among Female Students at UIN KHAS Jember from the Perspective of Women’s Psychology

By: Dr. Abdul Wadud Nafis, Lc., M.E.I.

The phenomenon of wearing maize pants among female students at UIN KHAS Jember is interesting to examine not merely as a matter of fashion, but also as part of the dynamics of women’s psychology. The way a person chooses clothing is often related to comfort, self-image, social environment, trends, and the desire to express one’s identity. Therefore, fashion phenomena within a university environment can serve as a reflection of how the younger generation’s perceptions of themselves and their social surroundings are changing.

From a psychological perspective, clothing is a form of nonverbal communication. Fashion choices can serve as a means of expressing character, preferences, personality, and even self-confidence. When maize pants become a trend among female students, this choice cannot necessarily be understood simply as following fashion. Some women may choose to wear them because they feel comfortable, practical, suitable for academic activities, or believe that they create a more modern and confident appearance.

The social environment also has a considerable influence. Female students live in an environment where mutual influence naturally takes place. When a particular style of clothing is widely worn by peers, an individual may be encouraged to adopt the same style in order not to feel different from the group. In social psychology, the need to be accepted and to belong to a group is an important aspect of human life, particularly during early adulthood, when individuals are developing their social identities.

At the same time, the development of social media has accelerated the spread of fashion trends. Instagram, TikTok, and various other digital platforms present a wide range of clothing styles that can be imitated in a very short period of time. What initially becomes a trend in one place can quickly become part of the lifestyle of university students elsewhere. Under such circumstances, women may choose clothing not only based on practical needs, but also by considering how they wish to be perceived by others.

Nevertheless, this phenomenon should still be understood within the context of the academic culture and values upheld at UIN KHAS Jember. As an Islamic higher education institution, ethical considerations, modesty, and Islamic values also contribute to shaping the culture of dress. Therefore, discussions about fashion should not be limited to the question of whether something is “permitted or prohibited,” but should instead encourage awareness of the balance between self-expression, comfort, appropriateness, and the norms prevailing within the academic environment.

Equally important is the need to avoid overly simplistic psychological judgments. A female student who wears maize pants cannot automatically be assumed to be seeking attention, succumbing to peer pressure, or possessing a particular level of self-confidence. Every individual has different reasons and experiences. Psychology teaches us to understand behavior within its context rather than assigning labels based solely on appearance.

Ultimately, the phenomenon of maize pants can serve as an opportunity to develop a more mature academic culture. Female students should have the freedom to express themselves while also recognizing that freedom comes with responsibility. Universities likewise have an opportunity to provide education concerning dress ethics, self-image, psychological well-being, and the wise use of social media.

Thus, the phenomenon of wearing maize pants is not merely about a particular piece of clothing. Behind it lie issues of identity, comfort, self-confidence, social influence, technological development, and the process of discovering one’s identity as a woman. What matters most is not simply how a woman dresses, but how she understands herself, respects herself, and is able to express herself wisely within her academic and social environment.
