When Falsehood Is Supported by Those Who Claim to Be Educated
Dr. Abdul Wadud Nafis, Lc., M.E.I.
Education should fundamentally serve as a path to discovering truth, cultivating wisdom, and fostering moral courage. However, reality sometimes reveals a troubling irony: falsehood is supported by people who claim to be educated. They possess academic degrees, master various theories, and speak eloquently about morality, yet they are not always capable of placing truth above personal or group interests.
Educated people should possess the ability to think critically, distinguish facts from opinions, and evaluate issues based on evidence that can be objectively verified and responsibly defended. Unfortunately, some people use their intelligence to justify what is wrong. They disguise lies with convincing arguments, conceal manipulation behind scientific language, and even justify injustice to protect certain interests.
This is the irony of education when intelligence is not accompanied by integrity. Knowledge, which should serve as a beacon of light for society, instead becomes a tool for perpetuating falsehood. Academic degrees, which should reflect intellectual depth, are used as shields to silence criticism and create the impression that their holders are always right.
Yet, the true measure of an educated person is not the height of their academic qualifications, the eloquence of their speech, or the extent of their influence. More fundamental qualities include the courage to admit mistakes, the willingness to accept facts, and the commitment to defending the truth, even when it conflicts with personal interests.
Society must also remain vigilant against falsehood legitimized by educated figures. When lies are supported by people with intellectual authority, their impact can become far more dangerous. Falsehood no longer appears to be an error; instead, it is presented as truth worthy of public trust.
Ultimately, education without honesty produces intelligence that has lost its direction. Our nation needs more than clever and knowledgeable people; it needs individuals of integrity who have the courage to stand on the side of truth.
For the wise seek the truth, while those who lack integrity are busy seeking justification for what they want to believe.
